Frequently asked questions
What is the most popular tour in Huaraz?
Laguna 69: a 5 to 6-hour hike to a turquoise lake at about 4,600 m. For your first days, Laguna Churup and Llanganuco are easier.
How many days do I need in Huaraz?
With 3 days you can acclimatize and do Laguna 69 last. For a multi-day trek or a summit, add at least 2 or 3 acclimatization days first. See our acclimatization guide.
Can I visit Laguna 69 without a tour?
Not since February 9, 2026: SERNANP only allows entry with agencies that hold a contract with Huascarán National Park.
Do I need experience for a multi-day trek?
You need good fitness and proper acclimatization; no technical experience is needed for the Santa Cruz trek or the Huayhuash trek. Climbing a peak requires more preparation: see climbing in Huaraz.
When is the best time to go?
SERNANP recommends May to October, the dry season. From October to April it rains, mostly in the afternoon.
